Kaanapali has seven long miles of beautiful sandy beach. The Black Rock is here and offers interesting snorkeling not too far off shore, especially if you are an early riser. When I am here, I like to stay at The Sheraton because it is right at the Black Rock. In fact, it is built into the Black Rock. If you go out early, (around 7am) you might get as lucky as I did and get to swim with giant sea turtles. That is a highlight of my life I will never forget! I also saw a small eel, an octopus and numerous fish. It was great. Hawaiian legend states that the spirits of warriors left the earth to meet their ancestors by leaping from the Black Rock. The Sheraton has a nightly ceremony with tiki torches being lit and then the warrior dives from the rock. Pretty amazing. They also have a Luau a couple of times a week. If you are staying in one of the bungalows, you can watch from your patio or balcony.

The grey whales come to Maui in December and stay until April. Here they have their babies and find a new mate. These creatures have the longest migration of all animals, from the cold waters of Alaska to the warm waters of Hawaii and back. If you like to bike ride, consider taking the Haleakala Bike tour. You ride from the volcano down to the shore. You can choose to go for the sunrise and have the experience of watching the sun rise above the crater or you go a little later in the morning. Nowhere else in the world can you go from sea level to over 10,000 in just an hour drive. The ride down is exciting! Want to horseback ride? Maui has that too. Rent a horse by the hour or the day and enjoy seeing the island from a whole different perspective. Maui offers PGA Golf, in a variety of courses. You can rent clubs and golf carts. You do need to plan ahead and reserve your tee times in advance. ![]() If you want to see the sea life, but are not into snorkeling or scuba diving, take advantage of Atlantis Submarines in Lahaina. Your submarine will go 130 feet below the surface and you will experience the fish in the comfort of your spacious, air conditioned submarine. See the rays, eels, octopus and beautiful tropical fish among the coral reefs. For an adventurous drive, take the drive to Hana. This is the most isolated part of Maui. You will see the Wailua Falls, a 95 foot water fall right off the highway. A stop at the Hana Cultural Center and Museum is well worth it. If you enjoy gardens, try the Kahanu Gardens.
