Cancun

Are you cold?  Tired of the rain and snow?  THINK MEXICO! THINK CANCUN!!

Long sandy beaches, hot sun beating down on you and a tall icy sweet drink...sounds like heaven to me.  Not to mention the shopping and the fabulous night life.  Cancun has it all.

Mayan ruins are just a couple of hours away.  The Chichen-Itza Mayan ruins are over 1500 years old and only about an hour and half drive from Cancun.
Be sure to take a hat with you, as the sun is brutal.  The best time to visit is either early morning or late afternoon.  Otherwise the sun is just too much.

You will see the El Castillo del Serpiente Emplumado, which translates to the Castle of the Plumed Serpent.  This is the central pyramid and is dedicated to the Plumed Serpent.  This was a popular deity in various Mesoamerican cultures.  The Mayans called this god Kukulkan, among many other names.

Beyond El Castillo, is the large ball court where Mayan men played pok ta pok.  It is believed that the object of the game was to throw a ball through a ring mounted 7 meters above ground on the wall.  The two teams consisted of 6 players and a captain.  The players could use any body part, except for their hands, to pass the ball to the captain.  The captain would then attempt to slam the ball through the ring using some sort of racket.  The captain of the winning team was decapitated as a sacrifice to the gods.  This was considered a great honor and assured entrance into heaven.

Tulum

The other Mayan ruins just a couple of hours away are Tulum.  Tulum is located near Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya area.  Tulum is the only known seaside Mayan ruins.  These ruins are less impressive, since the salt water has damaged them through the years.  Hieroglyphics are not easily read.
I would suggest seeing Tulum first and then going to Chichen-Itza, otherwise you could be disappointed in the ruins.  They are located on a beautiful bluff and the view itself is worth the trip!

Cancun is split between the lagoon and the Caribbean Sea.  On the lagoon side there is a plethora of water sports equipment available for rental by the hour, the day or your entire vacation.  On the Caribbean Sea side you will find the wonderful sandy beaches and the clear blue sea.  The beaches offer great sand for castle building, playing beach volleyball or just lazing in the sun on a lounger.

Love to scuba?  Cancun and Cozumel offer some of the world’s best scuba diving.  The waters are warm and crystal clear.  Don’t know how to scuba?  Many resorts offer PADA lessons and can get you certified quickly.  Just want to snorkel?  Snorkeling is a great way to get an up close view of the underwater world.  Just remember, look but don’t touch!  Leave the flora, fauna and coral for the next snorkeler to enjoy.  Most resorts will give instruction for snorkeling when you rent the equipment.

Want to catch that big marlin or sailfish?  Cancun offers fantastic deep sea fishing.   Go for a ½ day or the whole day.  You won’t be disappointed.

Speaking of not being disappointed, the night life is amazing!  Looking for excitement beyond the norm, here it is.  Try the Coco Bongo for entertainment you won’t soon forget.  You won’t know where to look next, at the dancers next to you or the arial dancers.  They will amaze you.
